RUBIC was formed in collaboration with the University of Connecticut to address behavioural deficits in African health and wellbeing. RUBIC has grown to include local universities and technical partners into its fold to provide innovative diagnostics, managed care solutions, research and biotech support to address health challenges. An extensive research platform forms the basis of RUBIC’s programs, leveraging this platform to provide cutting edge and innovative strategies for risk management to corporates, point of care diagnostics to practitioners, new drug development and pandemic preparedness. RUBIC unlocks the expertise and talent that lies wasted in tertiary educational institutions and other entities, providing a vehicle for conversion of skills into holistic, commercially viable solutions.


Our Professional Team

Dr Sandy Pillay

Dr Pillay is an Occupational Medicine Practitioner, HIV/TB Clinician and Clinical Researcher with more than 20 years’ experience in the fields of HIV, TB and occupational medicine. Dr Pillay is Director of the Enhancing Care Foundation and RUBIC Health which conduct internationally-funded research in the fields of infectious diseases and behaviour change.

He led the first round of the Global Fund’s HIV corporate program for the University of KwaZulu Natal and is currently the lead for the sub-recipient to the Global Fund’s HIV in the Mining Sector (TIMS) grant. Dr Pillay is widely published in the fields of HIV, TB and behavioural research. He has developed innovative, evidence-based COVID-19 workplace solutions using local and international guidelines and recommendations and is involved with cutting edge research into COVID-19 therapeutics in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health of the US and other partners.

Dr Moise Muzigaba

Dr Muzigaba is an MPhil, MPH and PhD qualified Public Health, Epidemiology and Biostatistics expert working at the Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing, World Health Organisation (WHO). He has served as Monitoring and Evaluation specialist and researcher at the University of KwaZulu Natal and was head of the Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Strategic Information (MERSI) Unit of the Enhancing Care Foundation.

He has experience in providing technical expertise and leadership across various projects specifically in the domain of developing and maintaining M&E systems, results-based management (RBM), Implementation/operations research, impact evaluation, and strategic information generation and dissemination. Dr Muzigaba is currently based in Geneva with WHO and is widely published in the fields of Infectious Diseases, Public Health, medical education and evaluation of systems.

Dr Ramsuran graduated with a PhD in Genetics from the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) before taking up a position at the Ragon Institute of MGH and MIT and Harvard University for post-doctoral research. He rejoined UKZN’s College of Health Sciences as Group Leader at the Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (KRISP).

Dr Ramsuram is an associate scientist at the Centre for AIDS Programme of Research in SA (CAPRISA) and the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the US Government. He has authored several high impact publications including a first author paper in Science. In addition, he has been the recipient of numerous honours and awards. Dr Ramsuran is senior scientist at the UKZN’s COVID-19 diagnostic laboratory and has been involved in the implementation of PCR testing for the university, National Health Laboratory Services and numerous private laboratory services as part of the COVID-19 response strategy for S.A.

Professor Chuturgoon is a medical biochemist, toxicologist and specialist in epigenetics and nanomedicine. He is a member several scientific associations including the South African Society of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, South African Association of Clinical Biochemists and America Society of Toxicology. He is on several editorial boards, including Nature (Scientific Reports).

He is a recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award for excellence in teaching. He is an NRF rated scientist and was placed in the top 30 UKZN researchers (2016-1018). He has successfully supervised and mentored over 60 Masters, 27 doctoral and 12 postdoctoral fellows. He is passionate about research and shaping young minds to think critically. He will provide oversight to the epigenetic component of this study

Prof. Zilungile Mkhize-Kwitshana is an Associate Professor in the school of Life Sciences (UKZN) and is a C3 NRF rated medical scientist and immunologist. She is an academic manager with over 30 years combined experience in Medical Research, Higher Education and Medica/Healthl environments encompassing routine clinical diagnostics in the public health sector, medical research, academic undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral teaching and supervision.

She has held an SA Medical Research Council’s Mid-career scientist position at the School of Laboratory Medicine and Medical Sciences (LMMS), after spending 4 years as the Head of the Biomedical Sciences Department, Faculty of Natural Sciences at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), while also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the LMMS (UKZN). She was previously a senior lecturer at this school before moving to MUT.
